CBD for Arthritis: 8 essential guidelines to consider

CBD for arthritis

Why would people consider using CBD for Arthritis?

Sadly, chronic joint pain is the very excruciating reality that a lot of people around the world have to live with daily

Although there are more than 100 different types of arthritis that don’t act alike, treatment is always aimed at reducing pain and stiffness and maintaining function for all these different types.

This is because most types of Arthritis are not cured by other treatments; therefore a big amount of medication that is prescribed is mostly to help with pain management.

On the other hand, these medications can be quite addictive in some cases.

CBD is considered a less addictive option than opiates, so some people have considered trying out CBD for Arthritis and chronic pain.

If this is your case, keep reading below to learn 8 pivotal guidelines to consider when you’re thinking about using CBD for Arthritis.

Do we have evidence that using CBD for Arthritis is helpful?

Two of the most common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition where in a person’s immune system attacks their joints, causing inflammation. It commonly affects the hands and feet and leads to painful, swollen, and stiff joints.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that affects joint cartilage and bones, causing pain and stiffness. It often affects the hip, knee, and thumb joints.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that some people with arthritis who use CBD report noticeable pain relief, improved sleep, or reduced anxiety.

8 essential guidelines to consider when using CBD for Arthritis

In the past, there’s been little guidance available for people with arthritis pain who were interested in CBD treatment. Depending on availability and interest, patients and their doctors had to decide on their own whether CBD was a good option in each specific case.

To a large degree, that’s still the case, but some guidelines have been published. Here’s a set of guidelines for people pursuing treatment with CBD that we find quite reasonable (based on recommendations from the Arthritis Foundation).

  1. When Considering CBD for Arthritis, look for a product that has been lab tested for purity, potency and safety. Also look for products with positive reviews.
  2. CBD should be one part of an overall management plan that includes non-medication options, such as exercise and psychological support.
  3. Choose an oral CBD Product and start with a low dosage, starting with 3x drops a day (Morning, Afternoon and Evening) under the tongue.
  4. Establish initial goals of treatment within a realistic time-scale. For example, a reduction in knee pain that allows you to walk around the block within two weeks of starting treatment; later, if improved, the goals can be adjusted.
  5. Tell your doctor about your planned and current CBD treatment, monitor your pain and speak to your doctor about any medication you are regularly taking so CBD doesn’t interfere. We recommend taking CBD 2 hours after any medication

  1. Don’t make CBD your only choice for pain relief, evidence indicates that CBD can be of great help but it is more appropriate to consider all possible treatments or use as an extra pain reliever.
  2. Don’t have non-medical practitioners that pretend to know about your condition, such as unlicensed or sketchy CBD products sellers, managing your chronic pain. That should be between you and your healthcare team, even if it includes CBD.
  3. For people with rheumatoid arthritis or related conditions, don’t stop prescribed medications that may be protecting your joints from future damage. Discuss any changes to your medication regimen with your doctor.
